Coronado's holiday season at the Hotel del Coronado runs November 20, 2026 through January 3, 2027. The town adds its own Holiday Parade on December 4, followed by the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights on December 13 and December 20. You can skate beside the beach, catch a free lightshow, or settle in at the Ferry Landing to watch decorated boats cross the bay. The trick is choosing one main event instead of trying to fit everything into one evening.

This guide was checked against official event pages on October 20, 2026. Reservations, weather and event schedules can change, so check the linked organizers before heading out.

The Del calls its 2026 season A Holiday Through Time, with Christmas trees inspired by different chapters in the hotel's history. See the hotel's holiday calendar for the full lineup, including beach movies, Santa photos and gingerbread decorating. Check each activity's booking page for its dates and cost rather than assuming everything runs nightly.

Skating by the Sea, and how to book it

The rink is on the beachfront Windsor Lawn at 1500 Orange Avenue, with Pacific Ocean views. Tickets include skate rental and 90 minutes of skating starting at check-in. Buy tickets online or by phone and complete waivers before approaching the check-in window. A reservation is valid only for the date and time you booked.

The official skating page lists:

  • November 20 to December 17: $40 to $45 general admission, depending on the date and time.
  • December 18 to January 3: $45 general admission.
  • $35 value sessions: before noon on November 21 to 25, November 29, December 5 to 6 and December 12 to 14, plus all sessions on December 1 and December 8.
  • $5 discount: resort guests, members, military and first responders with ID. The discount does not apply to value sessions.

Hours vary across the season. From December 1 to 17, the listed hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 2 to 10 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. December 18 through January 3 is listed as 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Check the full schedule for November dates and private-event closures.

For families, there are a few important details. Children under 12 need a skating adult with them. The hotel does not offer skate aids, although it has double-runner skates in toddler sizes. Parents cannot carry children while skating, and strollers are not permitted on the ice. Bring socks and consider bringing helmets; the hotel recommends helmets but does not provide them.

Reserve a sunset time in advance if that is the evening you want. A weekday session may give you more flexibility. Non-skaters can look into the separately reserved Frostbite Lounge or the hotel's dining spots with rink views. The hotel says it donates $5,000 from annual skating proceeds to Make-A-Wish San Diego.

What costs nothing

The Lightshow Spectacular is free, open to the public and does not require a reservation. It takes place among the Norfolk Island Pines on Founders Lawn, not on the hotel's main building. The approximately ten-minute show repeats every half hour from 5 to 9 p.m., November 20 through January 3, and ends with snow flurries. Check the official lightshow page before your visit.

The Bay Parade of Lights is also free to watch. The organizer confirms December 13 and December 20, 2026 for the 56th annual event. Decorated boats leave Shelter Island at 5:30 p.m. and follow the waterfront route before crossing toward Coronado.

5:30 p.m. is not the Ferry Landing arrival time. The official route page estimates arrival at the Coronado Ferry Landing around 7:40 p.m. That is approximate, not a guarantee. Arrive early enough to find a viewing spot, bring warm layers, and plan for a later evening if you are going with young children.

The December 4 town parade, and the December 2 festival

The City of Coronado's 2026 special-events calendar lists the Holiday Parade for Friday, December 4. A current official announcement confirming the parade's start time and the tree-lighting schedule and location was not available when this guide was checked. Save the date, but do not build your evening around a 6 p.m. start or a specific tree-lighting location until the organizer posts those details.

The Del's December 2 Holiday Festival has more of its schedule posted. It includes school performances, Skydiving Santa on Del Beach at 4:30 p.m., the lightshow from 5 to 9 p.m., and fireworks at 6:45 p.m. Skating runs 4 to 10 p.m. that day and requires a paid ticket. Santa photo details and school performance times were still to be announced. The festival page notes that times and activities are weather permitting and subject to change.

For a family evening at the hotel, December 2 could be a good choice: pick Santa or skating, leave time for food, and watch the fireworks. For a boat-parade night, make the Ferry Landing the main outing rather than assuming you can skate, watch the lightshow and cross town without a rush.

Getting there without losing an hour

The beachfront hotel and the bayfront Ferry Landing are different destinations. Decide which one you are visiting first, then work backward from your reservation or viewing time.

If you drive to the Del, skating does not include or validate parking. The skating page says standard parking rates apply, with $10 off day-visitor self-parking if you shop or dine at the resort. Check current rates and conditions before relying on that offer.

At the Ferry Landing, parking rules distinguish customers from other visitors. The two complimentary hours are for Ferry Landing customers only; other users pay on arrival. Rates vary, and overnight parking is not allowed. Free parade viewing does not mean free parking.

Taking the ferry can avoid a drive over the bridge, but check the current ferry schedule and fares for both directions before leaving. In particular, make sure the last return sailing works with the boat parade's later arrival at Coronado. No special parade-night ferry schedule was confirmed for this guide.

Build in extra time on event nights and check the city's latest event notices for street closures. Bring jackets, comfortable shoes and a snack for the wait by the bay.

Holiday meals at the Del

The hotel lists Thanksgiving dining on November 26, Christmas Eve dinner on December 24 and Christmas Day brunch on December 25 in the Crown Room. Current meal prices and children's pricing were not independently confirmed, so check the hotel's holiday reservations before budgeting or booking.

A hotel buffet is one way to make an occasion of it, not a requirement for a good evening. Skating, the free lightshow and dinner elsewhere in Coronado can work just as well. Make a reservation if you want a sit-down meal on a busy event night.

If the island starts to feel like home

It is easy to leave Coronado after a December evening and start doing real-estate math in the car. Before treating a holiday visit as a picture of everyday life, compare the housing, parking, commute and coastal ownership considerations.

Our Coronado community guide gets into those practical details. You can also compare San Diego communities to see which coastal neighborhood fits your day-to-day life. If you want help thinking through a move, email me.
