Where can you actually take a dog off leash in San Diego?

Open beaches are not the right fit for every dog. Grape Street Dog Park in Balboa Park is a fenced alternative. The five-acre park sits at Grape and 28th Street under mature eucalyptus trees, with water fountains for dogs and a restroom for people. Leashed hikes worth the drive

Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve has a mostly flat trail that runs about 7 miles end to end. It follows a creek with small waterfalls and plenty of shade from sycamore trees. Leashes are required and can be up to 8 feet long. It is an easy pick for older dogs, puppies, or anyone who wants a hike without much climbing. Watch for rattlesnakes and fast-moving bikes.
Mission Trails Regional Park offers two very different options. Cowles Mountain is the better-known challenge. It is the highest point inside San Diego's city limits and steep enough to tire a dog out. For something gentler, the Lake Murray loop runs about 6 miles on mostly paved paths around the lake.
