Old Town's Día de los Muertos plans are now confirmed for 2026. La Experiencia at Fiesta de Reyes runs September 1 through November 2 with free admission. The State Historic Park's free, family-friendly celebration runs October 31 through November 2, with a candlelit procession on Monday, November 2, at 6 p.m.

That gives you two ways to go: a quieter visit to the plaza displays before the main celebration, or a festival outing with crafts, performances and community altars. If you are going with younger kids, I would start in daylight and decide ahead of time whether the evening procession fits their bedtime.

This guide was reviewed on October 12, 2026, against the Fiesta de Reyes event page and California State Parks' 2026 announcement. Check those pages again before leaving for last-minute changes.

What La Experiencia actually is

Fiesta de Reyes sits inside Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Its Día de los Muertos displays include larger-than-life Catrinas, decorated skulls and skeletons, marigolds, altars and cultural interpretation. Dining, shopping and live entertainment are part of the setting too.

For 2026, the venue has added an integrated lighting package connecting the displays after sunset. Its own recommendation is to visit late afternoon into evening. It lists daily opening but asks visitors to confirm current hours, so do not assume every shop, restaurant or activity follows the same schedule.

Because the displays run for two months, you do not have to wait for the busiest celebration days. A weekday visit before the main event can be a more manageable way to see the details.

For directions, search for Fiesta de Reyes inside the State Historic Park. The venue's contact address is 2754 Calhoun Street, although its event page also prints 754 Calhoun Street. Confirm the map pin rather than relying on the inconsistent address alone.

The confirmed 2026 celebration schedule

California State Parks has announced three days of activities, including community altars, hands-on crafts, artwork, live performances and folkloric dancers. Admission is free; food and shopping are separate purchases.

Families can gather at Plaza de Armas or along the procession route to watch. November 2 falls on a Monday this year, so do not use a previous year's weekend schedule to plan the procession.

The park also announces temporary La Catrina-inspired art installations inside the U.S. House Museum and student artwork at the Captain Fitch Museum. Visitors are invited to bring an item for a community altar or leave a remembrance message in the monarch butterfly grove.

Older programs mention a street mercado, registered altar tours and a free outdoor screening of Coco. Those details are not confirmed in the State Parks announcement used for this guide. Check the Old Town event page for any additional 2026 programming rather than promising the kids a movie based on last year's listing.

Getting there without circling for parking

The Old Town Transit Center is next to the historic park. It connects MTS Blue and Green Line trolleys, buses, the COASTER and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, making transit a practical alternative to driving into a busy celebration.

Use the MTS trip planner to choose your route and check the last service home. For regional rail, check the COASTER or Pacific Surfliner schedule and ticket requirements separately.

Check the current MTS fare chart before buying tickets. MTS also describes a Family Weekends offer allowing two children 12 and under to ride free with a fare-paying adult on Saturdays and Sundays. Confirm the current terms for your trip, and do not assume a weekend offer applies to the Monday procession.

If you drive, State Parks identifies free parking at the Caltrans headquarters, 2994 Sunset Street, about two blocks from the park. Fiesta de Reyes says additional Caltrans parking is generally available on weekends and after 5 p.m. on weekdays. That does not guarantee a space or unrestricted Monday daytime access. Follow posted signs, accessible-space rules and any event restrictions when you arrive.

Going with kids

This is a celebration of remembrance, not a haunted attraction. A little explanation before you go helps children understand why families display photographs, favorite foods and flowers for people they love.

The park's announced activities include making papel picado, sugar skulls and paper marigolds. Pick a couple of stops rather than trying to see every display. Bring layers for the evening, choose a meeting point and keep children close when the plaza or procession route gets crowded.

If your kids cannot manage a late night, the daytime celebration or Fiesta de Reyes near dusk is a better fit than waiting for the Monday procession. Do not count on the unconfirmed Coco screening as part of the plan.

Altars can be deeply personal. Walk slowly, do not touch offerings, and ask before photographing anything that looks like a family's memorial.

State Parks allows leashed dogs in the park's outdoor areas, but not inside museums or buildings. Service animals are covered by its service-animal policy. For event accommodations, contact Old Town State Parks staff in advance.

What about SeaWorld?

SeaWorld San Diego's Día de los Muertos page describes Catrina statues, ofrendas and themed food, and says the celebration is included with park admission. That is different from Old Town's free outing: park admission, food and any applicable parking charges still need to be budgeted.

The SeaWorld page reviewed for this article did not clearly identify the celebration's own 2026 dates or hours. Check directly with the park before planning around a date on a third-party calendar. Do not treat the nearby Halloween Spooktacular schedule as the Día de los Muertos schedule.

Who lives close to all this?

Old Town sits near Mission Hills, Bay Park and the Midway District, with access to both the coast and central San Diego. The historic plaza and transit connections are useful neighborhood amenities, but walking distance, parking and traffic vary by address.

Start with the Old Town community overview, then compare the fuller Mission Hills guide and Bay Park family neighborhood guide. The San Diego Communities Guide can help you widen the search if you like this part of the city but need a different home style or budget.
